The Future of Spanish Air Connectivity and Technology in the Healthcare Sector: Key Themes at BNEW 2024
The 2024 edition of Barcelona New Economy Week (BNEW) focused on projecting the growth of air routes within the context of making aviation more sustainable, as well as ensuring access to future medicine for everyone. The event attracted 12,746 professionals, with 7,522 attending in person and 5,224 virtually, resulting in 10,129 business connections.
One of the key topics was discussed during the panel "Strategic Projections for the Development of Air Routes in Spain in a Global Context," part of BNEW Aviation, which debuted as a featured vertical this year. The panel included Ignacio Biosca, Director of Data and Aviation Market at AENA; Jordi Pla, Interim Chief Network and Strategy Officer at Vueling; and Gabriel Schmilovich, Director General of Strategy at Volotea.
The session provided a comprehensive view of Spain's competitiveness in air connectivity development, both present and future. It considered airlines, airport infrastructure, and current demand, evaluating Spain’s potential for continued growth.
During his presentation, Ignacio Biosca highlighted that “Spain is the fifth-largest country in the world in terms of passenger numbers, behind only significantly larger countries like the United States, China, and India. This, in itself, shows our competitiveness because it requires many profitable routes to remain competitive. In fact, according to traffic forecasts by the Airports Council International, we are projected to maintain this position through 2050. This reaffirms Spain as a major tourist destination, but other factors like airport capacity, costs, and efficient operations also play crucial roles."

Access to Healthcare: Another Highlight On the final day of BNEW, a session focused on the application of new technologies in the healthcare sector took center stage. Technologies such as 5G have enabled significant medical advancements, making previously impossible procedures a reality. Santiago de Torres, Executive Chairman of Atrys Health, moderated the session, which featured Josep María Campistol, General Director of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona; Manel del Castillo, General Manager of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona; and Montserrat Vendrell, co-founding partner of Aliath Bioventures.
Campistol addressed the current challenge of increasing demand coupled with a shortage of healthcare professionals. "This creates problems in terms of sustainability, accessibility, and equity. The only way to overcome this situation is through technology. A better future requires disruption, boldness, and new healthcare profiles."
Healthcare and aviation were two of the most prominent verticals at this year's event. Pere Navarro, the State Delegate at CZFB, praised the event for exceeding expectations, while BNEW General Director Blanca Sorigué confidently stated that the event “has firmly established itself as an essential gathering for the B2B sector.”
