Starlink Has a New Competitor: China Launches the First Satellites of Its Megaconstellation
China has launched the first satellites of its ambitious megaconstellation, aiming to provide global internet coverage and enhance data security. This new network is set to compete with Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service.
The Chinese project, known as 'Thousand Sails,' plans to deploy more than 15,000 low Earth orbit satellites, with 648 satellites expected to be in place by the end of 2025 to establish a regional network. The broader objective is to offer global internet access, secure orbital slots, and ensure data security.
According to SpaceNews, China plans to launch 108 satellites throughout 2024 in separate batches of 36 and 54 satellites, forming the first phase of the constellation, which will include 1,296 satellites.
Successful Launch
A Long March 6A rocket successfully delivered 18 satellites into low Earth orbit on Tuesday, August 6, after launching from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) announced that the mission was a "total success."
This megaconstellation, previously known as 'G60 Starlink,' has support from the municipal government and has raised $943 million through Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology to fund its construction.
About the Long March 6A Rocket
The Long March 6A is one of China's newest rockets and the first in the country to use solid rocket boosters. It can deploy payloads of up to 4.5 metric tons into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 700 kilometers.
