SpaceX Launches Starship Rocket and Successfully Catches Booster on the Launch Pad
Standing at nearly 121 meters tall, the Starship rocket launched at dawn from SpaceX's Boca Chica base in southern Texas.
On Sunday, SpaceX achieved a major milestone in space engineering by launching its massive Starship rocket in an ambitious test flight. The most remarkable achievement of the day was that, for the first time, the company successfully caught the first-stage booster with mechanical arms as it returned, after launching from the same platform where it landed just minutes later.
The Starship, standing at almost 121 meters, lifted off at dawn from Boca Chica, Texas, near the Mexican border. As in previous tests, the rocket traced a path over the Gulf of Mexico. However, unlike earlier flights, this time the first stage was successfully recovered. The accomplishment was made possible by the launch tower’s massive metal arms, known as "chopsticks," which caught the 71-meter booster after its controlled descent.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk celebrated the success on X, stating: "The tower caught the rocket!" SpaceX employees cheered as the booster gently touched down on the tower's arms.
SpaceX's Dan Huot expressed his excitement from the launch site, saying, "Even in this era, what we just witnessed feels like magic. I'm shaking right now." This moment will be remembered as a significant leap forward in aerospace engineering history.
Meanwhile, the spacecraft that separated from the booster continued its flight around the world, aiming for a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The full flight was expected to last just over an hour.
This achievement marks another major step for SpaceX toward reusing its Starship rockets, an essential development in future missions to the Moon and Mars.
