Sony Selects Barcelona for New European AI Development Center
Sony AI, a division of Sony Research and a subsidiary of the Japanese multinational Sony Group Corporation, has announced the opening of a new artificial intelligence (AI) development center in Barcelona, marking its second such facility in Europe.
The Generalitat of Catalonia confirmed that the company has received support from the agency for business competitiveness, Acció, to establish this new office in the city.
Focus on AI for Research and Gastronomy The new Sony AI office in Barcelona will serve as the division's central hub in the region. It will focus on developing AI systems to assist scientists in conducting complex research, accelerating discoveries, and exploring projects related to gastronomy.
According to Michael Spranger, President of Sony AI, "Catalonia is home to many research universities with AI programs and key organizations in science and technology. We are proud to expand our efforts to support creators in this open and innovative environment, and to learn and collaborate with the community."
Roger Torrent i Ramió, Minister of Business and Labor for the Generalitat, added, "We are thrilled that a global leader like Sony has chosen Barcelona for its first AI development hub in Southern Europe. This strategic investment project demonstrates that Catalonia is one of the most advanced ecosystems in Europe from a technological and scientific perspective. We look forward to building collaborative bridges between Sony AI and the local ecosystem of universities, research centers, startups, and companies to contribute to AI development from Barcelona, a technology that will define business competitiveness in the coming years."
Boosting Technological Development and Employment The establishment of Sony AI's new center in Barcelona will not only enhance technological development in the region but also create new employment and training opportunities for professionals in the AI field. This move reaffirms Barcelona's position as a technological hub in Europe, attracting high-level investments and projects in the AI sector.
The State of AI in Catalonia According to the study 'Artificial Intelligence in Catalonia' recently published by Acció, Catalonia currently hosts 488 companies dedicated to AI, nearly triple the number in 2019. The study indicates that the AI sector now generates a business volume of €2.155 billion, a 60% increase since 2019, making it the most significant among new exponential technologies in Catalonia. These nearly 500 AI-focused companies currently employ 14,525 people, a 71% increase in employment in the sector.
