Spain Among the Top 100 Science and Technology Clusters Globally, According to the Global Innovation Index

Spain has secured a place among the top 100 science and technology clusters in the world for 2024, as reported by the Global Innovation Index, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The index ranks countries and economies based on their high-level innovation capabilities.

The "Science and Technology Clusters" ranking within the Global Innovation Index identifies local concentrations of world-leading scientific and technological activity. Notably, Madrid is ranked 48th, and Barcelona 55th, with key players including the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), public universities, and companies such as Ericsson and HP.

Diana Morant, Spain's Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, emphasized the government's strong commitment to these scientific and technological ecosystems, facilitating the growth of clusters like those in Madrid and Barcelona. She noted that a record budget has been allocated in recent years, thanks to increased investment in science and innovation.

Morant also highlighted that "these two cities should serve as drivers for other Spanish regions, continuing to grow based on knowledge and innovation."

Between 2019 and 2023, Madrid saw 1,636 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications, with 21% of these related to digital communications. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 39,016 scientific publications, 12% of which were in the field of chemistry. Additionally, 31% of PCT patent applications from Madrid involved collaboration with other inventors, with major partner locations including Shanghai-Suzhou, Barcelona, and Stockholm. Furthermore, 57% of Madrid’s scientific articles were published in collaboration with other organizations, with top partner locations being Barcelona, Valencia, and London.

In Barcelona, there were 2,341 PCT applications between 2019 and 2023. During the period from 2018 to 2022, 30,502 scientific publications were produced, with 11% related to clinical medicine. In Barcelona, 23% of PCT patent applications were made in collaboration with other inventors, with key partner locations being Madrid, San Jose-San Francisco, and Portland. Additionally, 68% of Barcelona’s scientific articles were published in collaboration with other organizations, with major partners including Madrid, London, and Paris.

Global Innovation Index Since 2016, the Global Innovation Index has been identifying global concentrations of leading science and technology activity using a bottom-up approach. These clusters are determined by analyzing patent filings and scientific publications, mapping the geographic areas worldwide with the highest density of inventors and scientific authors. Two innovation metrics are used to compile the top 100 science and technology clusters globally.

The first metric focuses on the location of inventors listed in published patent applications under WIPO's PCT. The second metric considers the authors listed in published scientific articles.

WIPO locates and ranks science and technology clusters through a geocoding method that maps addresses and names extracted from documents with 96% accuracy.

The report annually ranks the performance of innovation ecosystems in economies around the world, while also highlighting the strengths, weaknesses, and specific gaps in innovation metrics. To capture a comprehensive view of innovation, it includes about 80 indicators, covering political environment, education, infrastructure, and knowledge creation within each economy.
