Clash of Titans: HUAWEI to Launch Its New Foldable Phone That Turns Into a Tablet on the Same Day as the iPhone 16
September 9 was a significant day in the tech world. Apple, one of the most influential and valuable companies in the market, held its keynote event to unveil several updates to some of its most popular devices. Notably, the new Apple Watch Series 10, 4th-generation AirPods, and the iPhone 16.
While the enhancements to the smartwatch and wireless Bluetooth earbuds were noteworthy, the spotlight was on the four new iPhone models announced: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Available for pre-order through the official Apple Store, these new devices are set to hit the shelves on Friday, September 20. However, they won't be the only major release that day. HUAWEI is set to debut its latest "toy": a trifold smartphone.
A Trifold Smartphone That Costs Over $2,800 HUAWEI was on track to become one of the most significant and influential brands in the mobile phone industry, but U.S. restrictions that prevented it from using Google services severely impacted its global reach.
Despite this, the company has persevered, continuing to release smartphones with impressive features that run on its own operating system, HarmonyOS, which includes its own app store and other notable services like the Petal Maps GPS navigation.
On Friday, September 20, Apple's iPhone 16 won't have the spotlight all to itself—at least not in China. HUAWEI will also be launching its new HUAWEI Mate XT, a double-foldable device that transforms into a tablet.
Foldable phones that split in half are no longer as surprising as they were a few years ago, becoming increasingly common in TV ads and on the streets. However, HUAWEI's offering is a trifold smartphone, reminiscent of a folding brochure.
Priced at over $2,800 (ranging from 19,999 yuan to 23,999 yuan, equivalent to around $3,370), the HUAWEI Mate XT has captured the attention of the Chinese market, with more than four million units pre-ordered following its official unveiling.
The HUAWEI Mate XT also boasts its own AI features, akin to Apple's Intelligence, and can display content on one, two, or three screens. When fully unfolded, the panel extends to 10.2 inches, effectively turning the device into a full-sized tablet.
With a thickness of just 1.9 millimeters, HUAWEI's latest sensation is compatible with a foldable keyboard, which is particularly useful when working with the device in tablet mode.

It's uncertain if the eye-catching HUAWEI Mate XT will ever be available outside of China. What is clear is that it has generated significant interest in its home country, as evidenced by the pre-orders. It remains to be seen whether Apple can win over the rest of the Chinese consumer base.
