Apple Concedes to Europe: Your iPhone Will Never Be the Same Again Due to the DMA

Owning an Apple device has always meant adhering to certain imposed standards: going through the App Store, having a standardized screen design, and dealing with limited and carefully controlled third-party integrations. This has contributed to Apple's success, praised for its ease of use, but it has also faced criticism for fostering a monopoly and imposing restrictions. Apple appears to have conceded to the DMA. This regulatory framework, aimed at preventing monopolies, requires tech giants to open their ecosystems, allowing for more options and increased competition. What Is the Digital Markets Act? The Digital Markets Act is a European Union regulation designed to ensure more open and competitive digital markets.

It came into effect in 2022 with the goal of curbing the power of large tech platforms, termed "gatekeepers" by the law, which control access to key digital services and have the power to influence the market in their favor. For Apple, this means allowing users to freely choose their default apps and services, as well as the option to uninstall native apps that were previously impossible to remove.

Apple Under the DMA Scrutiny The European Union has designated Apple as one of these "gatekeepers," pointing out that its control over iOS and the App Store restricted free competition and limited consumer choices.

The European Commission's initial investigations focused on the lack of choice for browsers and other default apps, as well as the difficulties in uninstalling pre-installed apps. Facing the threat of significant fines, Apple has decided to adjust its practices to align with the DMA's requirements.

Key iOS Changes Driven by the DMA One of the first visible changes will be the introduction of new browser selection screens in iOS and iPadOS. With the update to iOS 18, all devices with Safari as the default browser will display this selection screen whenever they are set up or undergo a major update.

Users will be able to choose from a list of the 12 most popular browsers in their country, with the option to automatically download a new one if it's not already installed on the device. This change aims to make it easier for users to choose browsers like Firefox, Chrome, or DuckDuckGo instead of Safari.

More Control Over Default Apps, Including the Option to Remove Them Apple has also announced the introduction of a new section in Settings that will allow users to view and manage all default apps. From this centralized panel, users can change the default apps for tasks such as dialing phone numbers, sending messages, translating texts, browsing, managing passwords, and filtering spam calls.

But the most significant change is the ability to delete native apps like the App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari. Previously, these apps could not be removed from the device, forcing users to keep them even if they didn't use them.

With these changes, Apple allows users to better manage their experience and choose third-party apps that better suit their needs.
